Most of Mao's portraits are already gone. And it looks as if Marx, Engels, Lenin, and Stalin are on the way out. That's the word from enormous Tiananmen Square in Peking where millions once paraded before the late Chairman Mao. A well-placed source says the portraits of Marx, Engels, Lenin, and Stalin will soon be removed as part of a program to "beautify" the city.

As for Mao, four of his portraits now hanging from the Great Hall of the People and the historical museum on the square are being taken down. In the end , only his portrait hanging from newly refurbished Tiananmen Gate may remain.
