Recent reduction in wholesale gasoline prices by four US oil companies appeared to be escalating a price war. Gulf Oil Corporation, Marathon Oil Company, Sun Company, and BP Oil Inc. slashed prices by between a penny and 3 cents a gallon within the past week, depending on grade and region of the country.
