N.Y.-N.J. commuters lose Hudson link in strike

Striking carmen shut down the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) commuter line Thursday, forcing 80,000 riders to scramble for alternate transportation between New Jersey and Manhattan. Local 1330 of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen walked off the job after voting to reject the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's offer of a 25.5 percent raise in a three-year pact. When PATH was struck in 1973, the "Hudson tubes" were empty for 63 days.
