Haitian refugees in the Bahamas could threaten the tranquility of the 700 -island nation. Bahamians have always resented the illegal Haitian immigrants since they began fleeing their poverty-stricken homeland in 1957. But the antagonism seems to be deepening. There was an ugly clash between Haitians and Bahamians on New Providence recently. And the dangerously overcrowded sloops reaching the island often receive an angry reception.

Sensing the mood, the government of the Bahamas is about to attempt the deportation of 1,000 Haitians each month. Previous attempts at deportation have not proved notably successful.m
