Bay State rail mishap releases dangerous gas

Phosphorous trichloride was released Thursday when a tank car containing 13, 000 gallons of the potentially dangerous gas was struck by a passing locomotive in Somerville, Mass.Monitor staff member Scott Thompson reports that the gas was later being drained into an excavation.

Thousands of persons were evacuated from the region and residents were warned to stay indoors. Twentytwo persons were under hospital observation.
