The necessary resurrection

Christ Jesus' resurrection is a principal stone in the foundation of Christianity. Yet this remarkable achievement cannot remain merely a historical event if Christianity is to fulfill its promise. Resurrection is something we all have to work toward, resurrection from lifeless mortal concepts -- sickness, wrong motives, hatred, fear. Such resurrection enables us to Christlike in power and depth of thought. It enables us to bring out our wider purpose, the purpose for which we were created -- to glorify and be glorified by God. It enables us to heal.

Resurrection isn't a supernatural experience. It is Christ, God's transfiguring effect, reforming human life, destroying limitations and revealing divine reality and substance, where we and all truly live forever. Mary Baker Eddy n1 defines "resurrection" as "spiritualization of thought; a new and higher idea of immortality, or spiritual existence; material belief yielding to spiritual understanding." n2 This resurrection leads not to life unconnected with reality but to reality itself, a broader life, a clear and noticeable lessening of subservience to material limitations, and the ability to help others move beyond those limitations.

This resurrection comes to us moment by moment. Through daily commitment to God, we put heal in God's name -- maybe in simple ways, but we can actually do it!

Healing, more than anything else, is what really plants us in Christ, what enables us to bring a significant blessing to humanity. Through healing we add to the already conclusive proof that physical and mental health are derived from God; that matter is really powerless.

So let's start healing if we want to keep progressing. Mrs. Eddy writes, "Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power. These proofs consist solely in the destruction of sin, sickness, and death by the power of Spirit, as Jesus destroyed them. This is an element of progress, and progress is the law of God, whose law demands of us only what we can certainly fulfil." n3

n3 ibid,m P. 233.

Healing of sickness and other evil through God's power is really not a mysterious proposition. It's a necessary part of our advancement out of a material, limited sense of ourselves into true, unlimited being. If we've never healed a mortal difficulty through Christ's power, we really haven't discerned our true capacity.

In a very real sense, then, all of us, as we mature spiritually, as we understand and live under God's law through conforming to the Bible's demands, are following the path Christ Jesus has laid out. This path includes healing. Healing power develops through resurrection. And resurrection, as the Master has shown, is possible for one who follows unflinchingly the way of Christ. DAILY BIBLE VERSE Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. He is not here: of he is risen, as he said. Matthew 28:5, 6
