Peacekeepers taken out of stormy Chad capital

By

About 550 Congolese peacekeeping troops have been evacuated from N'Djamena after coming under heavy artillery fire from one of the rival Muslim armies seeking power in Chad, Western sources said Monday.

The Western sources said the French and Congolese evacuations appeared to be proof that the fighting between the two warring factions of President Goukouni Oueddei and Defense Minister Hissene Habre was raging out of control. The latest ceasefire, reported Sunday, appears never to have taken effect.

Meanwhile, the International Red Cross has been pleading for a truce to permit the arrival of medical teams and the evacuation of the dead and wounded.
