Request to investigate Miller turned down

The Justice Department has denied a congressional committee request that a special prosecutor be named to look into the business activities of Treasury Secretary G. William Miller, congressional sources said Tuesday. Senate Banking Committee chairman William Proxmire had asked for the special prosecutor to investigate whether Mr. Miller was telling the truth when he told Congress in 1978 he knew nothing about payoffs by his former company, Textron Inc.

Last month the Securities and Exchange Commission concluded that Mr. Miller had made "erroneous and misleading statements" when he told Textron shareholders early in 1978 that he knew nothing about payoffs to foreign officials
