Petzold wins gold medal in 10-km cross-country

East Germany's Barbara Petzold won the gold medal in the women's 10-kilometer cross-country ski race at the Winter Olympics Monday. Kilkka Riihivuori and Helena Takalo, both of Finland, won the silver and bronze, respectively. This is the first time since 1968 that the Russians have been shut out of medal in this event.

Meanwhile, Soviet Sports Minister Sergei Pavloc was quoted in the Austrian newspaper Die Presse as saying the Soviets will take part in the Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, even if the US boycotts this year's Moscow Olympics.
