Viet artillery shells land in Thai border area

About 20 artillery shells hit Thai territory Monday as Vietnamese-led forces kept attacking a stronghold of guerrillas loyal to the ousted Khmer Rouge government near Thai border in western Cambodia, Thai military sources said. They said the fighting pushed nearly 40 Khmer Rouge guerrillas across the border into Thailand, but they were sent back later by the Thai Army.

The latest round of fighting close to the border erupted last Friday after weeks of small-unit operations against the stronghold by the Vietnamese-led forces, who drove the Khmer Rouge government out of Phnom Penh a year ago.
