New warnings posted in Hawaiian storm

New flash-flood, high-wind, and high-surf warnings were posted throughout Hawaii Thursday as the freak winter wind and rainstorm sweeping over the islands claimed its sixth fatality. Between 50 and 100 homes were estimated to have sustained wind damage, and a number of shoreline residences and hotels in Kona experienced flooding from the surf.

Meanwhile, back on the mainland, new snow slowed emergency crews battling to clear roads and restore power to thousands of homes in the snowbound Pacific Northwest Thursday. But the brunt of the storm pushed eastward over the Rockies , prompting winter storm warnings. Light rain lingered in southern California, still mopping up from heavy rains that caused street flooding and mud and rock slides.
