TV and movie composer to get Boston Pops baton

John Williams, a three-time Oscar and two-time Emmy winner, who wrote the score for the movie "Star Wars," has been named to succeed the late Arthur Fledler as conductor of the Boston Pops, it was disclosed Thursday.

Williams has composed the scores for more than 50 films, and with this background it is felt that he will be able to bring excellent television and recording opportunities to the Pops. Like his predecessor, Williams is at home in both the classical and popular music traditions. His classical works have been performed by many leading US orchestras.
