COLLEGE BASKETBALL

In a week filled with upsets, the biggest one occurred in Knoxville, Tenn., where unranked Tennessee stunned No. 2 Kentucky, 49-47. No. 4 North Carolina and No. 6 LSU each lost twice, Iowa dropped its first game after 10 straight wins, and Indiana, which began the season top-ranked in several polls, was beaten twice and saw its record slip to 7-4.

Tennessee jumped out to a 15-4 lead and eventually edged the Wildcats on Howard Wood's eight-foot jumper with two seconds left. Wood, who had 14 points, started in place of the Vols' top scorer, Reggie Johnson, one of two Tennessee players suspended for violating training rules. The loss was only the second for Kentucky, which had won 12 straight since dropping its opener to top- ranked Duke.

John Campbell's 28 points led Clemson to a 93-76 rout of North Carolina, and the Tar Heels were later also beaten by Virginia, 88-82. LSU lost to Vanderbilt , 77-66, and stumbled again as Alabama eked out a 57-56 upset on Robert Scott's layup with 10 seconds left.

Michigan upset Iowa 68-65 as Keith Smith's two free throws with three seconds left sealed the verdict. Indiana's losses also were both nip-and-tuck affairs, 59-58 to fifth-ranked Ohio State and 52-50 to Wisconsin, the former decided on freshman Clark Kellogg's two free throws with seven seconds left and the latter on a 25-foot jumper by Wes Matthews with 46 seconds on the clock.
